Regular Group Literacy Tuition at Ms Calleja’s Classroom
My upper primary small groups work on a range of skills designed to extend their writing style, versatility and sentence structure, spelling and grammar.
We work on a range of texts from short stories, novel extracts, non-fiction, poetry and song lyrics to extend their exposure to vocabulary and genre and to further their comprehension skills.
We have a heavy emphasis on phonics – paying attention to phonemic awareness (hearing the sounds in words), phonics knowledge (common and less common variations on the same sound) using structured synthetic phonics programs such as Sounds Write, Jolly Phonics and Phonic Books UK.
At the end of each session we do about 15 minutes of Maths, focusing on core skills such as place value, time, multiplication and division, money maths, decimals, fractions and word problems.
